Message from the IFDS President
On the eve of my departure to attend the Access Worlds in Rutland, GBR, next week, I am happy to report that the registration for the IFDS Worlds in July in Medemblik is looking very strong. The IFDS Technical Delegate, Ian Harrison, reports that the organizers are in final stages of preparation; we will be planning for a sailors' forum at that event as well as the launch of the new IFDS web site. Vice-President Wilfried Klein, in conjunction with retired IFDS President Serge Jorgensen, has been hard at work to develop the site, which we hope will prove useful to the sailing community in some new and different ways. Topics for discussion at the forum may be sent either to Hannah Stodel or to Emma Little at emma@isaf.co.uk . The IFDS Executive Committee will also be meeting during this event.

We were informed last week by the Edison Sailing Center in Ft. Myers, Florida, USA, that because of leas issues with their sailing site, they would not be able to hold an IFDS World Championship in 2012. However, an excellent alternative site in the same area is a good possibility and will make an announcement as soon as details are confirmed.

I am looking forward to a couple of busy months for IFDS and I look forward to good sailing for many of you. As always, our thanks to you the sailors and to the many volunteers and officials who make all this possible.

Best wishes

Linda Merkle
IFDS President

IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championships, 2010, Homerus, Blind Match Racing
Circolo Vela Gargnano on Lake Garda, Italy will host the IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championships, 2010, Homerus Blind Match Racing from June 20-27. Conducted in conjunction with Homerus Associazione Onlus, the event will employ the ISAF Experimental Appendix CBS for Blind Match Racing using the innovative Homerus system of acoustic buoys.

Teams from Australia, Finland, Great Britain, Italy, New Zealand, Spain and USA have already confirmed their entries. This is the 12th Homerus International Championships and the inaugural event to be conducted as an IFDS authorized World Championship. A separate series of match races will be held for the B1, B2 and B3 classifications for the first time in Bogliaco. The B1 Division for totally blind sailors will be an IFDS World Championship, while the B2 and B3 Divisions will sail Level 2 IFDS International Championships.

Sailors competing in this event must be IBSA classified B1, B2 or B3 - legally blind. The championships are sailed in pairs of identical keelboats by a two-person blind or vision impaired crew with a sighted observer on board. Three acoustic buoys, each with a unique signal, define the course and each boat has its own acoustic device that changes signature when it is on port or starboard tack.

Delta Lloyd Regatta 2010, Medemblik, NED

The close racing in the 2.4mR saw the top four boats within six points of each other. Thierry Schmitter (NED) has kept top place since day one. Damien Seguin (FRA) won the last race and is in second place overall with only two points from first. Two Brits, Helena Lucas and Megan Pascoe are third and fourth.

"It was very close racing with Thierry and Megan" explains Damien Seguin. "It is good to have closed the gap with Thierry. Tomorrow will be a big fight with three races. The racing here is very challenging and it promises to be an interesting Worlds here next July!"

Gold medallist Paul Tingley (CAN) is enjoying racing in the Delta Lloyd Regatta "I like the short and steep waves. It does provide exciting and challenging races. There were many lead changes and I had a good spot from the back!"

The Artemis Even Keel Challenge, Challenge Trophy, August 2010, Cowes, Great Britain

A fleet of six Artemis 20 keelboats, helmed by qualified skippers and crewed by 12 novice sailors from a mixed background of disability or disadvantage, will compete for the inaugural Artemis Even Keel Challenge Trophy over two days at Cowes Week in early August. The race winners from Day 1 will then be joined by some of the leading names in sailing for what is set to be a highly competitive Pro-Am finale on Day 2. Each celebrity sailor will guest helm on the final race.

The Artemis Even Keel Challenge series kicks off on Sunday 1 August at 1730 hours local time with 12 novice sailors and their qualified skippers competing in two races over a set course, each lasting around 30 minutes.

Speaking on behalf of The Even Keel Project, Managing Director Dave Rutter said, "Since the start of the Artemis Even Keel Project at UKSA, it has been both humbling and invigorating to see so many people sign up to use the project from such a wide range of disabilities and backgrounds many of whom had never sailed before. Watching them signing up for more sailing having caught the bug is simply fantastic. To now have the support of some of the world's best sailors is quite simply adding icing on the cake."
