Message from the IFDS President
It was a pleasure to see so many of you in Miami at the OCR last weekend; congratulations to all of you who competed in the three Paralympic classes. Thanks go as well to the organizers for a well-run event; it was a good beginning to the 2010 sailing season.

Please make special note of the information regarding competition in subsequent World Sailing Cup Regattas and the events which will be used for IFDS Rankings. But also note the other competition opportunities which will occur during the year, especially the first country qualification regatta for the 2012 Paralympic Sailing Competition; which will be held in the Netherlands in July.

A Happy New Year to all of our sailors and their friends and supporters. The other members of the IFDS Executive Committee and I look forward to seeing and working with you during this very busy sailing season. Thank you as always to the volunteers, coaches and support personnel who make all of what we do possible.

Best wishes

Linda Merkle

Rolex Miami OCR, 25-29 January 2010
After five days of racing on Biscayne Bay, gold, silver and bronze medalists were determined on 29 January 2010 in three Paralympic classes at US SAILING's 2010 Rolex Miami OCR, the second of seven stops of the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Sailing World Cup 2009-2010.

The Rolex Miami OCR, which this year hosted 448 teams (633 athletes) from 45 nations, is one of the world's most competitive regattas for those hoping to claim a sailing berth at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and as such it offers hefty bragging rights for podium finishers as well as critical points on the Sailing World Cup circuit and for certain national team designations and rankings.

2.4mR

Canada's Paul Tingley secured the first gold of the regatta when his 2.4mR class sailed two back-to-back races (on the staggered-start schedule) in light air. Going into today, he was in the bronze medal position, with Thierry Schmitter (NED) leading and John Ruf (USA) in silver position, so he decided to get gutsy.

SKUD18

US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG) members Scott Whitman and Julia Dorsett continued their winning streak by clinching the gold medal with a race to spare. USA's SKUD18 newcomers, Jen French and JP Creignou won a silver medal, which was impressive considering this is only the second event they've sailed together. French and Creignou won both races today, but in the first race, they were called OCS for starting prematurely. Dorsett and Whitman's second became a first, which gave them the win.

Sonar

Norway's Sonar team of Aleksander Wang-Hansen, Per Eugen Kristiansen and Marie Solberg grabbed gold after a low-scoring week littered with bullets, including today's win in the last race. GBR's John Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Steve Thomas finished the event second overall, and USA's Rick Doerr, Brad Kendall and Hugh Freund secured bronzer.

IFDS Disability Categories at ISAF World Cup Events
ISAF have approved the following advisement by IFDS from the 2009 IFDS AGM: In relation to the 2010 ISAF World Cup, should individual event organizers wish to include sailors in the 2.4mR, SKUD18 and Sonar who do not meet the Paralympic Eligibility requirements, that IFDS would not object. It would be anticipated that all sailors would follow the same restrictions as set in the class rules for disabled sailors for operation of the boats, and ranking points would only accrue to competitors meeting the Paralympic Eligibility requirements.

ISAF Sailing World Cup/IFDS Ranking
The IFDS Executive Committee offers the following for the purposes of clarification. This statement was circulated during the 2009 IFDS AGM.

ISAF Sailing World Cup Standings
Sailors competing in the Paralympic Sailing disciplines (One-Person Keelboat, Two-Person Keelboat and Three-Person Keelboat) will attract ISAF Sailing World Cup Standings Points at any of the ISAF Sailing World Cup events provided they meet Paralympic Eligibility Requirements.

The IFDS Executive Committee would like Paralympic classes to be included at all SWC events if possible. Individual classes can identify the particular venues/events to focus their competition.

IFDS Ranking System
Sailors competing in the Paralympic Sailing disciplines (One-Person Keelboat, Two-Person Keelboat and Three-Person Keelboat) in events identified by IFDS for ranking purposes will attract IFDS Ranking Points provided they meet Paralympic Eligibility Requirements.

The events identified for 2010 are:
ISAF Sailing World Cup, Miami Olympic Classes Regatta, USA, January
ISAF Sailing World Cup, Semaine Olympique Française, FRA, April
IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championships, NED, July
ISAF Sailing World Cup, Sail for Gold, GBR, August

The IFDS Ranking System trial has so far been based on the above three ISAF Sailing World Cup events. Monitoring of attendance at various events will continue through the first quadrennium and be reviewed on an ongoing basis.

IFDS Rankings Working Party
The IFDS Executive Committee proposes to establish an IFDS Rankings Working Party - John Twomey (IFDS Vice-President) as Chairperson, Betsy Alison (Chairperson, IFDS Coaches Commission) as Deputy Chair and one representative from each of the Paralympic Sailing disciplines (One-Person Keelboat, Two-Person Keelboat and Three-Person Keelboat).

Blind Sailing Challenge
Mitsuhiro Iwamoto - ITSUHIRO IWAMOTO - Goal = To Become the First Blind Sailor to Sail Across the Pacific Ocean.

In the Southern California seaside town of San Diego, there's a Japanese blind sailor brimming with energy - Mr Mitsuhiro Iwamoto, 42 years old.

Mr Iwamoto was born with weak eye sight, became fully blind in middle school and says that he cannot even sense light anymore.

During 2009 Mr Iwamoto has competed in offshore races and in numerous races in San Diego bay mostly on Nelson Marek 43, B'Quest II of Challenged America but recently has bee developing his own project called 'My Dream Is Your Dream'. The project would involve him sailing across the Pacific from California to Japan with the other sighted people.

"It's not just about personal achievement - I want a lot of people to be inspired through this sailing voyage. A person of disability teams up with a non-disabled person to navigate a yacht safely to accomplish a task - that would be the greatest example of a barrier-free society. A person who can see communicates to a person who cannot to make the impossible possible. I want to communicate the meaning and value of living from the standpoint of those of us who cannot see to those who can see. I believe that sailing across the Pacific Ocean is the first step in communicating that message." Mr. Iwamoto's firm belief is slowly but surely moving people's hearts. However, to make his trans-Pacific sailing expedition a reality, he still needs a lot of support.

Hilary Lister To Announce Plans To Race Offshore At London Boat Show

At the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show, quadriplegic yachtswoman Hilary Lister will announce her intention to compete in the 2011 Rolex Fastnet Race in a Class 40 boat. Hilary is now actively seeking sponsors for this project.

Hilary, who is paralysed from the neck down, became the first disabled woman to sail solo around Britain in 2009, controlling her boat entirely with her breath. This feat led to her becoming one of the four woman finalists in the 2009 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards.

Ideas about enabling Hilary to race offshore were discussed as far back as 2008. On completing the Round Britain Dream (RBD), Hilary and her team began giving this serious thought. Towards the end of 2009 the feasibility of sailing in the Class 40 fleet and campaigning for a 2011 Fastnet start was examined in detail. Key suppliers have been recruited. Jeckells The Sailmakers have come onboard. Raymarine and Ocean Safety will continue their support. Simon Rogers will design the boat (Simon is responsible for Hilary's current boat). Harken are developing key equipment.

Geoff Holt arrival in Tortola on the 7 January 2010 and was the first quadriplegic to sail across the Atlantic.

It has taken 28 days in total from his departure in Lanzarote to the arrival and emotional return to Cane Garden Bay where he will revisit the place of his accident that paralysed him 25 years ago.

The journey has been far from plain sailing, Geoff was most worried about sleep deprivation but he has faced a mountain of other challenges along the way. Engine problems just three days in meant an essential stop to the Cape Verde Islands and unexpected light prevailing winds made progress frustratingly slow for Geoff. It has also been emotionally straining having to spend Christmas and New Year apart from his Wife Elaine and seven year old son Timmy.

In 2007, Holt sailed his way into the record books when he became the first disabled yachtsman to sail single-handed around Great Britain. Holt hopes that his journey will raise awareness of the accomplishment of other disabled sportsmen and women and inspire others to push their own personal boundaries.

Impossible Dream, the boat Holt sailed across the Atlantic, belongs to Mike Brown, who competed in the 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games.

SKUD18's at Sail Melbourne 2009, AUS

The first leg of the 2010 ISAF Sailing World Cup at Sail Melbourne has been run and won with the crews greeted with great sailing conditions for the final day of racing.

After the unpredictable weather during the regatta, Melbourne turned it on for the final races with a south-easterly wind between 12 and 15 knots for the majority of the day.

Duncan and Peter Macgregor (AUS) won the SKUD18 class, with final race winners Daniel Fitzgibbon and Tim Lowe (AUS) second overall, ahead of Ame Barnbrook and Lindsay Mason (AUS).

2008 Paralympic Silver medallist in Qingdao, Fitzgibbon missed the first two days of racing. Sailing consistently with his regular shore support crew Tim Lowe in the front of the boat, Fitzgibbon marched up the leader board with a series of race wins. But it was not enough to overtake fellow Queenslanders Duncan & Peter MacGregor who had 5 heat wins already in the bag.

For the New Zealand team of Tim Dempsy & Paulien Eitjes, Sail Melbourne was their first opportunity to take on competition in the SKUD 18. They had only sailed together a few times in Auckland before making the trip to Melbourne and learned a lot during the regatta. Dempsey will be back in Melbourne for the 2010 Australian Access Class Championships in January, sailing his SKUD with a temporary crew.

2010 Australian Access Class Championships - AUS

The Australian Access Class Championships concluded on the 17th January 2010 at the Royal Brighton Yacht Club, Melbourne, Australia.

Sailors from 7 States and Territories in Australia were joined by a group of 7 kiwis for the four day program. In total, 54 sailors with a disability participated.

The weather was mainly sunny with winds ranging from 5-20 knots, but strong breezes on Saturday afternoon and Sunday limited the number of races that could be completed.

This was the first time that the SKUD18, the equipment used in the Two-Person event at the Paralympics have been included in the event. The division was won by Duncan MacGregor & Peter MacGregor (AUS) by two points from Ame Barnbrook & Lindsay Mason (AUS).

In the Liberty, serial runner-up Barry Coates (AUS) finally had a breakthrough to win comfortably from Genevieve Wickham (AUS) and John Toole (NZL). Coates has finished second at the 2007 and 2009 Liberty Worlds and the 2009 European Championships.
