Welcome to December 2009 Newsletter

As we head for Christmas all of us at touraid would like to send you our best wishes for the festive season.

We were saddened to hear of the untimely death of Walter Odoch who toured with Kyadondo Balenzi from Uganda in 2006. Our thoughts are with his family and friends both in Uganda and the UK.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Club touraid event at Brew Wharf last week. The evening was a huge success and a great introduction for Mike Phillips, as our new Ambassador.
2010 promises to be yet another incredible year with 7 tours already confirmed, including the performing arts and a four team rugby festival to be held in the Wirral driven by Caldy RFC.

Thank you all again for your support this year for touraid and we hope to see you at the Cabbage Patch on the 27th December !!

Caldy RFC U12's
CALDY TOURAID FESTIVAL 2010

Charlie Hodgson, former England and current Sale Fly-Half, visited Caldy RFC on Saturday to officially launch his role as ambassador for the Caldy touraid Festival in September 2010.
Charlie met with the Club's Under 12s squad who will be welcoming around 60 boys from some of the poorest parts of the world to the Wirral for a week of rugby, fun and friendship.
The impact of this festival is being felt far and wide with teams from Thailand, India, Botswana and Swaziland taking part. Indeed, 94 primary schools in Swaziland are competing to win the right to represent the Kingdom!
The children, who will be hosted by local schools which to date include Pensby Sports College, Birkenhead, Kingsmead and West Kirby Residential School, are given the opportunity of a lifetime to represent their country and return as role models and leaders in their communities.

Mike Phillips guest's at Club touraid event in London

Club touraid held it's third event this year at Brew Wharf in London last week. Mike Phillips was the guest of honour and joined in an interesting question and answer session hosted by John Inverdale.
Mike generously donated a signed Lions shirt and Brew Wharf also announced that touraid and Skrum www.skrum.org are to be their 2010 appointed charities. £1 will be added to all bills throughout 2010 with the proceeds being shared between the two charities.
Thank you to all the staff and management at Vinim Restaurants for their wonderful hospitality and support.

MONEY FOR MILK

Another wonderful tour legacy has been the formation of Money for Milk. The charity was set up as a result of an U15 boys team from Reeds Weybridge RFC visiting the orphanage of Baphumelele in the township of Kayelitscha outside Cape Town, South Africa.
The boys raised money for touraid last year and we would like to thank them again for all their efforts to support disadvantaged children in SA and around the world.
This really does raise the bar for what can be achieved when legacy is the tour's objective. Well done all!

Tudu Takes Rugby Back to his Village

India Rugby player Sailen Tudu, who recently played in the
touraid Charity match, is planning to take rugby back to his village next year. Tudu's village is in a remote corner of India and no rugby has ever been played there. Tudu along with six fellow students from Hartpury College plan to spend a week in the village of Dhangaam teaching and training local youngsters during their half term break. The students are currently working on a range of fundraising activities and are determined that they will create something in the village that will last. If you would like to support Tudu in his efforts please email him at sailen.tudu@gmail.com
