Message from the IFDS President
Preparations are in final stages for the IFDS Annual General Meeting in Busan, Korea, on Monday, November 9. Several important issues will be discussed and decided at that meeting, the results of which will be conveyed to all of the IFDS RNA's as soon as possible afterwards. The 2009 IFDS Worlds concluded in Athens with a good regatta; the ISAF World Cup events for 2010 get underway in Melbourne, Australia, from the 14-19 December 2009. And the calendar for 2010 is going to once again be a full one for our sailors. Also note that the website for the 2010 IFDS Worlds in Medemblik is up and running - see article below.

I hope that those of you who are in Busan will attend the IFDS Development Seminar on Sunday 8 November 2009. This promises to be a useful and productive session under the direction of Pauline Harrison, chair of the IFDS Development Committee.

Please be attentive to the postings of information which will follow the meeting, and as always, please notify us of the dates of events as soon as possible as our calendar is filling rapidly. Thank you to the sailors and the volunteers who make our sport the growing success which it is. I look forward to seeing many of you in Korea.

Linda Merkle
President

2009 IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championship, Athens, Greece
The 2009 IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championships came to close in Athens, Greece on Sunday with gold medals in the three Paralympic sailing events going to Germany, Great Britain and The Netherlands.

After a week of rain, the sun finally shone for the final day of racing in Athens, with the final two races held across each of the three Paralympic sailing events competing. Dutchman Thierry Schmitter claimed the World title in the Single-Person Keelboat - 2.4mR event, whilst Britain took the title in the Two-Person Keelboat event, with the SKUD18 duo of Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell winning their first ever World title. In the Three-Person Keelboat - Sonar event the German team of Jens Kroker, Siegmund Mainka and Robert Prem added the IFDS World title to the Paralympic gold medal they won in Qingdao last September.

With 27 athletes representing 11 nations, the 2.4mR fleet was the largest competing in Athens, but that did nothing to stop Schmitter, runner up in this ISAF Sailing World Cup, from dominating the series from start to finish. Heiko Kroger of Germany took the silver medal, with Britain's Helena Lucas completing the podium.

Olympic Sailing Host Venue Marks 1000 Days To London 2012

The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) will be marking the 1000 day countdown to the London 2012 Olympic Games with a local 'Revive Portland Project' Halloween event on 31 October.
It is now a year since the award winning, world-class sailing venue celebrated full completion, followed by a memorable Royal visit by Her Majesty the Queen and it is now fitting that the landmark 1000 days countdown starts with a local community event inspiring the people of Weymouth and Portland to start their celebrations leading up to London 2012.

The 31 October 'trick or treat' weekend event will be free to the entire South West, including a lantern procession starting at 18:00 from Portland Castle, fanfare of ship's sirens and magnificent water based firework display at 20:12 hours, all followed by fancy dress and lantern competitions with plenty of legendary local Dorset food, drink and music. Rachel Sadler, Assistant Chief Executive of WPNSA will be on the judging panel for the spooky themes.

Recently Injured Veterans Sail Away in San Diego

Sunday, September 27, 2009 -- At the recent National Veterans Summer Sports
Clinic (Sept. 19 - 25, 2009), more than 60 recently injured veterans sailed
from the San Diego Marriott Marina on the "Big Bay" in their introduction
to sailing as a therapeutic activity.

For the second year in a row, the National Veterans' Affairs Summer Sports Clinic came to San Diego Bay, USA in September 2009.

"The goal of the National Summer Sports Clinic is to heal the whole person - body, spirit and mind through these adaptive programs. That's the true mission of the Department of Veterans' Affairs," said Richard Olague, Public Affairs Coordinator.

The veterans participate in several sporting activities including surfing at La Jolla Shores, kayaking at Mission Bay, and field sports at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. Port tenant San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina serves as the host hotel and marina for the sailing venue. The sailboats were donated by Port tenant, Challenged America.

At least 75 Challenged America volunteers help out for the week. Ken Guyer, Marina Manager at the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina, also a Vietnam Vet, hosts the sailing venue.

"You can't describe watching these people as they go through these evolutions," said Guyer. "They're a little nervous at first, then they go out, and the smile you see when they come back, it's very much worth it. As a vet myself, this is just absolutely unreal."

Participation in the clinic is open to military veterans who are eligible for VA medical care and who have orthopedic amputations, traumatic brain injuries, burn injuries, psychological trauma, certain neurological conditions, visual impairment, spinal cord injuries and other injuries incurred in the last six years.

US SAILING's Gay S. Lynn Memorial Trophy

Friday 23 October 2009 in League City, Texas was special for several key contributors to the sport of sailing at US SAILING's Annual General Meeting Awards Dinner. US SAILING presented awards to those who made an extraordinary impact in the areas of sailing education, race management and disabled sailing.

US SAILING's Gay S. Lynn Memorial Trophy, - Betsy Alison Head coach of the US Disabled Sailing Team AlphaGraphics, Betsy Alison, was awarded the Gay S. Lynn Memorial Trophy award for her outstanding contribution to sailors with disabilities.

The five-time US SAILING Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year, five-time US SAILING Rolex Women's Keelboat Champion, and two-time Yngling World Champion has redirected her focus over the past several years to disabled sailing and Paralympic competition. She has provided leadership for the US Disabled Sailing Team for the last three Paralympic Games. She trains and develops sailors, manages the budget, handles equipment, and generates funding and support for her team. The U.S. has one of the most successful Paralympic sailing programs in the world. This was evident in the 2008 Paralympic Games when the U.S. collected Gold and Bronze medals.

On several occasions, Alison led clinics for members of the Wounded Warrior Project, a program for injured military veterans. This past June, she coordinated coaches, adaptive boats and equipment at the Newport Naval Base in order to provide sailing opportunities for the veterans. This fall, Alison helped coordinate an adaptive sailing pilot program for inner-city youth at the Piers Park Sailing Program in Boston, Mass.

"Disabled sailing enriches our sport," said Alison. "I'm proud to know that so many people want to embrace disabled sailing."

First presented in 2003, the Gay S. Lynn Trophy annually recognizes outstanding service, over a significant period of time, to disabled sailing and disabled sailors in the United States. The trophy may be awarded to a volunteer, a professional, or an organization. It is the country's only award of its kind for disabled sailing. For more information on US SAILING's Gay S. Lynn Memorial Trophy, please visit http://racing.ussailing.org/Categories/One_Design/Disabled_Sailing/Gay_S__Lynn_Memorial_Trophy.htm
