Message from the IFDS President
|
First, congratulations to all the sailors who participated in the ISAF Sailing World Cup Series this year. I know that there are some issues which need to be worked out, but generally, it seems that all went generally well in this trial year for IFDS participation. Our thanks to Alastair Fox, ISAF Events Manager and the World Cup Organizing Committee for doing all they did to ensure success for the Paralympic classes.
As you will see in the Bulletin, we are approaching both our 2009 IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championships and the IFDS AGM in the next two months; I want to highlight an important component of the AGM. IFDS will be hosting a Development Seminar on Sunday 8 November 2009 beginning at 09:00 hours local time. It will be led by Pauline Harrison, Chair of the IFDS Development Committee, and will give an overview of the following objectives:
Starting or developing a local and/or national disabled sailing programme;
Increasing the number of sailors with disabilities in your country;
Selecting and adapting venues, boats and equipment;
Developing a partnership with your national disabled sports organization;
Networking with other countries for information on best practice.
All are urged to attend; refer to the section on the AGM in the Bulletin for further details.
I look forward to seeing many of you in Athens; we plan to have a sailors' forum during the event. If you have topics or issues which you wish to raise there, contact Hannah Stodel at hstodel@me.com
Good sailing to all!
Linda Merkle

IFDS New Internet Platform
|
As a result of a very generous grant given to IFDS by METS (Marine Equipment Trade Show), IFDS are able to develop a new Internet Platform which will be designed to meet the specific needs of our sport.
This new website will exist independently of the current site housed on the ISAF Website and will provide a means by which examples, specifications and guidelines for new technologies and adaptations be communicated to sailors. Our intent is for it to contain boat adaptations, sailor and builder forums and examples of best practices around the world.
The new platform will be an open space, which means that individuals as well as manufacturers will be able, with authorization, to place information on the site. The information can be in the form of a report, a video, photos, etc. For start-up, the language will be English but translation to other languages is part of our plan.
IFDS has established a working party to help provide input into the development process. Members include Keith Burhans (USA) and Colin Johanson (AUS), both of whom are known for their innovative and creative approaches to boat adaptations. Other committee members include Berenice Chiarello (BRA), Emma Hallen (SWE), Gene Hinkel (USA) and Heiko Kroeger (GER).
Serge Jorgenson (USA), past IFDS President, is providing the technological development of the site; we are also working to establish the process by which individuals may contribute to the site.
The proposed launch will be at the 2009 IFDS Annual General Meeting to be held in Korea in November.
I am contacting you to urge your interest in and support of this project and to encourage your contributions. This is very much still in the development stage; if you are interested in providing materials, ideas, etc., please contact me at mailto: wm.klein.ifds@gmx.de
Please support us in this very exciting new Internet platform which is made possible with thanks to METS for their financial support. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kinsale Yacht club rows in behind kids with disabilities
Ireland's first summer sailing programme organised specifically for children with disabilities is going at full force in Kinsale Yacht Club. It is organised by the Irish Disabled Sailing Association in conjunction with Kinsale Yacht Club.
The programme is attracting a lot of attention both locally and nationally. There are smaller programmes starting in Galway and Dún Laoghaire with other Clubs earmarked nationally. The ISDA intend to have a vibrant children's programme all over Ireland in the coming years.
The programme is currently offering weekly Saturday sailing sessions, in Kinsale harbour, where up to twenty five children and teenagers receive coaching from qualified instructors. There are two safety ribs on the water at all times and the children also enjoy time in these.

Paralympic Gold Medalist Scandone Wins US SAILING's National Sportsmanship Award
US SAILING, the national governing body for the sport, has announced the winner of its National Sportsmanship award, the W. Van Alan Clark Jr. Trophy, to the late Nick Scandone (Fountain Valley, Calif.). On the 27 August 2009, US SAILING's Executive Director, Charlie Leighton, presented the national sportsmanship award to Nick Scandone's wife, Mary Kate, following the awards ceremony for the C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Memorial Regatta at Fort Adams in Newport, R.I.
The 2008 Paralympic Gold Medalist passed away on 2 January 2009, after a long battle with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, a debilitating neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. An avid sailor since he was a child, Scandone reached his ultimate goal of winning a Paralympic Gold Medal at the 2008 Paralympic Sailing Competition, Qingdao, China with SKUD18 teammate Maureen McKinnon-Tucker. Scandone beat the odds of his disease by not only being strong enough to compete at the 2008 Paralympic Games, but by winning the gold medal a day early, with two races left to go.

Inaugural Access Class European Championships
The Inaugural Access Class European Championships concluded in Port Camargue, France with nine races completed for the Access 2.3, 303, Liberty and SKUD18.
Societe Nautique du Gran Du Roi Port Camargue (SNGRPC) were the host club and organising authority for the event in conjunction with the French Access Class Association.
Day One - September 10
After a practice session and opening ceremony on Wednesday, racing commenced on a beautiful sunny morning today. Principal Race Officer Serge Rouanne (FRA) held the fleet ashore until a 6 knot south westerly had filled in.
Race one was sailed in a steady 7-8 knots, and the SKUD18 immediately showed its pace, leading out the mixed Neo495 and Liberty fleet.
The Liberty class was closely contested by Barry Coates (AUS) who was runner up in the Liberty Worlds this January, and experienced Mini G sailor Magali Moraines (FRA). Moraines won the initial heat with Coates close behind. As the wind increased to 10-15 knots for the subsequent races, Coates turned the tables and lead around the course, but Moraines was ready to capitalize on any mistakes. Vera Voorbach (NED sailed consistently to pick up a third in each race.

Mobility Cup Concludes In Toronto, CAN
The inaugural Mobility Cup in 1991 kicked off the annual Canadian-hosted international regatta for sailors with a disability.
In 1999, The Mobility Cup came to Toronto and left in its wake the Disabled Sailing Association of Ontario - what has become the country's largest sailing programme of its type.
Usually restricted to the Canadian built Martin 16, this is the first year the Access Liberty has been included in the Mobility Cup. The International 2.4mR North American Championships were also held as part of the event. The multi-class format was regarded as a highly successful innovation for the event and the 2.4mR and Liberty sailors look forward to competing in future Mobility Cups.
Single-Person competition in the Martin 16 gold fleet, and companion sailors in the silver fleet provided competition opportunities for experienced and novice racers alike.
Canadian and US competitors enjoyed four days of great racing in perfect conditions on Lake Ontario, with sunshine and light to moderate breezes. The event was hosted by Ashbridge's Bay Yacht Club.

Rosenfield posted bullets in all seven races, while French skippered her crew to six wins in eight races, including a pair of second place finishes. Teams prepared to race in the Skud18 doublehanded division moved into the Ideal 18 fleet prior to racing on Saturday. The singlehanded fleet consisted of four boats, while the Ideal 18s included eight teams.
