Message from the IFDS President
|
Two major events are coming up soon for us, the ISAF Sailing World Cup, Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta 2009, Weymouth, GBR and the IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championship, 2009, Athens, Greece. In addition, there have been regattas in France, Germany, Great Britain, USA, the ASEAN Games in Malaysia and an event in Canada next week. We like to feature these events, especially those which are more local in nature, as they represent the core of the growth of our sport. We depend on you to communicate what is going on where you are. But we are also interested in any other activities around the world that reflect the growth of sailing, so keep us informed about these as well. In addition, we welcome new and returning members to our expanding list of Recognized National Authorities (RNA's). We certainly welcome all to the fun of sailing, at whatever level you choose!
I would also like to make note of the departure of David Grevemberg from his position as Executive Director of Sport and IF Relations with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). He will be taking up the post of Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee as their Director of Operations in mid October 2009. David has been a true friend of sailing for people with disabilities; he has supported us wholeheartedly and his wisdom, insight and counsel will be sorely missed. I wish him well in his new post and would hope that he would not forget his friends at IFDS.
Looking forward to seeing some of you at the Mobility Cup next week and many more of you in Athens at the Worlds. As always, special thanks not only to the sailors but also to the numerous volunteers who help make everything happen.
Linda Merkle

Special Olympics International - Tribute to Eunice Shriver
|
We note with sadness the passing of Eunice Shriver (USA), founder of Special Olympics International. She is credited with helping to create awareness of the skills and potential of people with mental challenges and disabilities. She recognized that they were much more capable than they were given credit for, including participation in sport and competition. In 1968, she founded what would become the world's largest competition for the mentally challenged - the first Special Olympics, held in Chicago, drew over 1,000 participants from 26 states and Canada. It has grown to include over 3 million athletes in 160 countries.
President Barak Obama said of her that she will be remembered as a "... champion for people with intellectual disabilities, and as an extraordinary woman who as much as anyone, has taught our nation - and our world - that no physical or mental barrier can restrain the power of the human spirit."
Those of us in the sailing community will remember her as a tireless advocate for sports for all - including sailing, which has been included in the SOI games for a number of years. For all of us, she stands as an ideal for the spirit and power of mainstreaming and inclusion. Those of us at IFDS are proud to salute her, her vision, and her great legacy to the people of the world.

Kinsale Yacht club rows in behind kids with disabilities
Ireland's first summer sailing programme organised specifically for children with disabilities is going at full force in Kinsale Yacht Club. It is organised by the Irish Disabled Sailing Association in conjunction with Kinsale Yacht Club.
The programme is attracting a lot of attention both locally and nationally. There are smaller programmes starting in Galway and Dún Laoghaire with other Clubs earmarked nationally. The ISDA intend to have a vibrant children's programme all over Ireland in the coming years.
The programme is currently offering weekly Saturday sailing sessions, in Kinsale harbour, where up to twenty five children and teenagers receive coaching from qualified instructors. There are two safety ribs on the water at all times and the children also enjoy time in these.

Paralympic Gold Medalist Scandone Wins US SAILING's National Sportsmanship Award
US SAILING, the national governing body for the sport, has announced the winner of its National Sportsmanship award, the W. Van Alan Clark Jr. Trophy, to the late Nick Scandone (Fountain Valley, Calif.). On the 27 August 2009, US SAILING's Executive Director, Charlie Leighton, presented the national sportsmanship award to Nick Scandone's wife, Mary Kate, following the awards ceremony for the C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Memorial Regatta at Fort Adams in Newport, R.I.
The 2008 Paralympic Gold Medalist passed away on 2 January 2009, after a long battle with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, a debilitating neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. An avid sailor since he was a child, Scandone reached his ultimate goal of winning a Paralympic Gold Medal at the 2008 Paralympic Sailing Competition, Qingdao, China with SKUD18 teammate Maureen McKinnon-Tucker. Scandone beat the odds of his disease by not only being strong enough to compete at the 2008 Paralympic Games, but by winning the gold medal a day early, with two races left to go.

12th International German Championship "2.4mR"; 1st International Championship "Sonar"
The 12th International German Championship for 2.4mR's and first International Championship for Sonars, held recently in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, provided a new experience for some of the sailors. The three to four knot stream during decreasing wind causes sailors who are sailing upwind to move backwards. Also, the tide in Wilhelmshaven runs about two meters high. However, only one race had to be cancelled. And the sailors very quickly find a way to sail very competitively in these conditions.
After 8 races in the 2.4mR's, Thierry Schmitter (NED) was one point ahead of Heiko Kroger (GER), but in the final race, Heiko showed his skill, winning the race and the regatta.
The Sonar fleet was dominated by the German Paralympic Gold Medal team of Jens Kroker, Robert Prem, and Siggi Mainka. They won every race and the regatta without being challenged.
We were glad that the Polish Sonar crew came to compete; they and the German team were sparring partners in preparation for the 2008 Paralympic Sailing Competition and did their part to help Jens and his crew win the gold medal in Qing Dao. Many thanks for this splendid help. Also of note was the participation in the regatta of Dr, Jürgen Schwittai, IFDS International Classifier. He made no comment on his finishes but reported that he had a great time sailing.
Thanks also to the Wilhelmshavener Segelclub - WSC - who organized an ideal regatta. Club members were very helpful, standing by on water and land to assist as necessary and the sailors had a great time!

The C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Memorial Regatta, USA, 23-27 August 2009
When the competitors left the dock for the third and final day of racing at the C. Thomas Clagett Jr. Memorial Regatta, they did so in a beautiful crisp 12 knot northerly that unfortunately died off over the course of the morning. While the total absence of breeze ultimately forced the last races to be abandoned for the SKUD18 and J/22 classes, all the competing fleets (2.4 mR, Sonar, SKUD18 and J/22s) sailed a ten-race series, except for the J/22s who sailed 11, and the day ended with the standings unchanged as the fleet leaders prevailed to claim the top prizes.
Racing in Sail Newport's fleet of J/22s, 2008 Blind Sailing National Champions Sengil Inkiala (Waltham, Mass.), Nancy Jodoin (Newton, Mass.) and Ken Legler (Reading, Mass.), with Naomi Shwom (Sharon, Mass.), added two more bullets to their scoreline to successfully defend their title. The 2006 IFDS Blind Sailing World Champions JP Creignou (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Jan Bartleson (Miami, Fla.), racing with sighted guides Diane Fowler (St. Petersburg) and David Bannister (Miami), were awarded the silver for second overall. Ryck Lent (Waltham, Mass.) and Mark Bos (Gloucester, Mass.) with Arthur O'Neill (Needham, Mass.) and David Gilman (Sharon, Mass.) added an OCS in the final race of the series, to their 3-2 from earlier in the day, to hang on to third place overall for the bronze.
Top three finishers in each class:
2.4mR
1. Julio Requero (PUR), awarded the C. Thomas Clagett Jr. Memorial Trophy for the best overall performance by a sailor in the regatta.
2. Charles Rosenfield (USA)
3. Timothy Ripley (USA)
Sonar
1. Rick Doerr (USA), Hugh Freund (USA), Josh Saltmarsh (USA)
2. Dennis Moran (AUS), Jonathan Evans (AUS), Michael Coxan (AUS)
3. Charlie Croteau (USA), Jim Donahue (USA), Pauly Atkins (AUS)
SKUD18
1. Scott Whitman (USA), Julia Dorsett (USA)
2. Shan McAdoo (USA), Maureen McKinnon-Tucker (USA)
3. Sarah Everhart-Skeels (USA), Bob Jones (USA)

RYA Sailability Multi Class Regatta, Rutland, GBR, 14-16 August 2009
72 boats and 94 disabled and able-bodied sailors converged on Rutland Water over the weekend, 14-16 August to compete at the third annual RYA Sailability Multi Class Regatta.
Competitors from as far afield as Scotland, Ireland and across the UK battled it out in the eight classes - 2.4mR, Access 2.3, Access 303, Access 303 Liberty, Artemis, SKUD18, Squib and Challenger - demonstrating great skill in the blustery conditions.
Each class competed in two fleet races, both scheduled for Saturday, however due to winds of up to 30 knots; the afternoon fleet race was postponed to Sunday morning. Sunday culminated in an all class pursuit race, which proved quite a spectacle as nearly all 72 boats raced around the course in the near perfect conditions - sun and wind, a rare sight for UK summertime!
