Message from the IFDS President
|
As you read through the information contained in this Bulletin, please make note of several important upcoming events and activities. The calendar is getting busy!
The 2009 Sail for Gold Regatta, Weymouth, Great Britain, is about six weeks away. IFDS is still in discussion with the ISAF World Cup Management Team as to whether World Cup Paralympic classes might be open and under what conditions. However, note that any such decisions would not apply to the SFG event for in Weymouth 2009 but would take effect beginning with the Melbourne event this December.
Also note that the IFDS Medical Committee will be holding an IFDS International Classification Seminar in conjunction with the IFDS World Championship in Athens, Greece in October 2009; this is the opportunity for those interested to learn first hand about the workings of the IFDS classification system as well as for those who wish to train to become classifiers. In addition, we will be organizing an open forum for sailors early in the event. Most of the members of the IFDS Executive Committee will be present. I would urge you to send any topics you would like discussed to Hannah STODEL, the new chair of the Sailors' Advisory Council; you may do this through email to the IFDS Secretariat and they will be forwarded to Hannah.
In addition, please be attentive to deadlines for submissions to the Annual General Meeting as well as for nominations for IFDS Executive Committee and Committee positions. We welcome your input and nominations.
Also note that during that meeting, IFDS will present a Development Seminar geared specifically to guidance for beginning new programs and reactivating old ones. We especially encourage countries new to the IFDS family to attend.
Through the great effort of Vice-President David STALEY, the 2008 IFDS Annual Report will be distributed shortly. It presents a broad picture of the activity and scope of our sport; we welcome any feedback you would like to provide. Special thanks to David for his good work.
IFDS Secretary, Emma LITTLE confirms to me that over six hundred sailors, sailing friends and officials receive the Bulletin each month. That is a great sign of the health and growth of our sport. But remember that your help is needed in our efforts to reach and report on what you are doing. Please submit items of interest to us, be it an individual who has been honored or one who is taking off on a challenging adventure. Of course, we are interested in the results of events, whether they are big or small. The bulletin should reflect you, the sailors.
Finally, as always, my thanks to the IFDS Executive Committee and Committee Chairs for their efforts in behalf of our sailors. This group, along with Emma, has a collegial spirit which makes working with them a pleasure.
Looking forward to seeing some of you at the Mobility Cup in September and others of you at the Worlds in October.
Very best wishes
Linda MERKLE

IFDS Sailors Advisory Council Chair, Hannah STODEL (GBR)
|
Having recently been offered the opportunity to represent the IFDS Sailor's Council, as Chairman, I jumped at the chance. As you well know, IFDS is run in majority by a huge number of volunteers, doing a great job and putting in hours of their time to make the organization so successful. It is great to have the chance to give something back and hopefully help to make a difference.
As Chairman of the Sailors Advisory Council, I intend to pull from my experiences of working in the British Paralympic movement over the last ten years. I am looking forward to injecting some youth and enthusiasm into the job, whilst working closely with existing committee/commission members and sailors alike.
IFDS President, Linda MERKLE recently quoted in an IFDS Bulletin,
"Your continued support and communication with us are essential to the growth of the sport and the health of IFDS."
As individuals, our voices have little volume, but together they are amplified. I look forward to hearing from you and ensuring that our collective voice is heard.
I hope that all sailors, whether Paralympic hopefuls or leisure cruisers can really come together and have a say. It is our sport; let's make the best out of it!
Please feel free to email with any thoughts or comments you may already have to me.
I look forward to hearing from you in due course.
Happy sailing!
Hannah STODEL

2012 Paralympic Sailing Competition
|
As a result of extensive discussions held by the IFDS Executive Committee in June, IFDS has informed the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) of our decision to maintain the medal events program and quotas of the 2008 Paralympic Sailing Competition for the 2012 Paralympic Games. Many factors went into this decision; we concluded that it is in the best interests of the sport to strengthen the level and quality of competition for 2012 as we continue to explore additional opportunities for the 2016 Games.
Venue
The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA), has won an acclaimed International Architecture Award. The International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS), the only organisation for sports facilities recognised by the International Olympic Committee, and The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) announced the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy as winner of the 'IPC/IAKS Distinction for Accessibility 2009'.
Disabled access to the venue was a huge influence to the purpose built WPNSA facilities, with disabled access hoists on the pontoons providing the safest access to tidal waters for people with disabilities anywhere in the UK.
Helena Lucas, Paralympic Sailor, comments on WPNSA, 'I love training in Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour as they offer a wide range of sailing conditions. The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy is an unbeatable venue for disabled sailors with new, customised facilities. I don't know of any other sailing venue where the needs of sailors of all abilities are so well catered for'.

Paralympic Day 2009
|
Paralympic Day 2009 took place in the middle of Berlin at the historic "Pariser Platz." Playing fields and a long jump course were built in front of the Berlin Door. These were surrounded by exhibition tents. Visitors watched demonstrations of wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, wheelchair dancing and sitting volleyball. On the jump course, Matthias SCHROEDER (GER), jumped 7.47m, a new world record. German President Professor Dr. KÖHLER visited the site. He is a great fan of disabled sports, spending over an hour observing the demonstrations. IFDS Vice-President, Wilfried KLEIN discussed at length with IPC President, Sir Philip CRAVEN about sport in general, but in particular about sailing.
The candidate cities for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games were also being exhibited at the site. Wilfried asked the representatives present about the sailing venues for the games. It was discovered that each location has very attractive and very different opportunities for sailing.
Andrew PARSON, President of the Brazilian National Paralympic Committee (NPC) and I spoke about the development of sailing in Brazil, but it is my opinion that focus should be given to the development of Disabled Sailing in South America.
Linda MASTANDREA, Director of Sports Paralympiques from Chicago, USA, spoke about sailing on Lake Michigan. This venue is right at the waterfront with the skyline of Chicago in the background.
From Tokyo, Japan, Koshi Nemoto was present. He confirmed that the sailing venue is close to the mainstream sports and only 10 minutes from the Paralympic Village. Sailing would be held in Tokyo Bay in front of the new Wakasu Olympic Marina.
In Madrid, Spain, sailing would take place in the same venue as the Americas Cup in Valencia.
In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the sailing events would occur in front of the Copacabana.
I got the impression that all of the candidate cities that disabled sport, in particular sailing, provides a unique selling point for each location.
A reception in the evening provided time for us to get together to refresh old contacts and find new ones.
The Paralympic Day was an impressive demonstration of disabled sports and the conversations held were most useful.
Best Wishes
Wilfried Klein
IFDS Vice-President
