Message from the IFDS President
Sailing activity continues unabated around the world; I hope that all of you are participating, whether locally at the "go for a fun sail" level or nationally and internationally at ISAF World Cup and one design levels. And I hope that you are making plans for the IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championship occurring in October 2009 in Greece - it promises to be a great regatta with famous Greek hospitality.

The IFDS Executive Committee and Committee Chairs are at work on various projects; the Medical Committee classifiers are staying busy with ISAF World Cup events and preparation for the IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championship in Athens, GRE. My request to all of you at the half-year point of the new quadrennium is that you let us know how we are doing and what we can do to be of assistance to you.

As always, we want to know what you are doing - whether, as is Jamie Dunross, you are planning a grand sailing adventure further information can be found in this bulletin) or opening up new opportunities for sailing as in Brazil. Your continued support and communication with us are essential to the growth of the sport and the health of IFDS.

Thank you

Linda Merkle

First Quadriplegic to Solo Circum Navigate the World
Jamie Dunross wants to become the first quadriplegic sailor to circle the globe unassisted.

A talented and determined able-bodied sailor, Jamie lost the use of his legs and part of the use of his arms, rendering him a C5 quadriplegic as the result of an industrial accident at the age of 23 in 1988.

Jamie endured a long, painful and often emotional period of recovery but eventually regained his interest in sailing. With the support of family and friends he has reached amazing heights, including a gold medal at the Sydney 2000 Paralympics.

He also mentors youth crews and works with two community programs, Sail Into Life and Sailing for the Disabled.

Now this remarkable athlete wants to conquer the world!

Paul CAYARD Supports Disabled Sailors at the West Marine/Challenged America Regatta
Paul Cayard has joined West Marine and Cortez Racing Association for a benefit to support Challenged America sailors with disabilities in the first West Marine/Challenged America Regatta, June 12 & 13, 2009, in San Diego.

"From being a seven-time World Champion and two-time Olympian, and five-time America's Cup veteran, to be the first American to win the Whitbread Around The World Race, Paul Cayard's name and presence is quickly identified and talked about in virtually every yacht club and sailing venue in the world," said Urban Miyares, blinded Vietnam veteran, sailor, and Challenged America co-founder. "Having Paul take time out of his busy schedule to come to San Diego to help us and do the keynote at our Friday, June 12 dinner and auction is truly a special treat. And once the word gets out, I'm hoping we have enough room at the Bali Hai Restaurant on Shelter Island to accommodate everyone who is looking to meet Paul and hear him speak."

The inaugural West Marine/Challenged America Regatta is a fundraising event supported by West Marine and San Diego's Cortez Racing Association (CRA) to help support the charitable Challenged America adaptive sailing program for disabled veterans, kids and adults with disabilities.

Beginning on Friday (June 12) at 4 pm, local yacht club commodores will race in the Challenged America program's Martin 16, two-person sailboats from the Bali Hai Restaurant's dock for bragging rights of winning the (perpetual).
"Commodores Challenge" trophy -- that will be proudly displayed at the West Marine store's entrance for all to see.
