Message from the President, Linda MERKLE (USA)
|
The IFDS Executive Committee had a very productive Face-to-Face meeting in Southampton, GBR, over the weekend of 13-15 February 2009. We were most appreciative of the hospitality of ISAF, who welcomed us to meet at ISAF headquarters. Over two and a half days of conversations with a full agenda, we were able to move forward with plans for the next quadrennium. Minutes of that meeting will be available on-line shortly.
At that meeting it was noted that there was a very small response to our request for voting on the proposed USA submission from the 2008 AGM relating to skipper/crew functions in the SKUD18. This is a significant issue; therefore the Secretariat will be re-circulating the submission with a request for a reply on that submission from each RNA, whether it be positive, negative, or neutral. Each RNA should receive that request shortly and any responses will need to be received by the deadline.
IFDS is aware of a number of events taking place during 2009, for both open and closed, Paralympic and other classes. In addition the IFDS Blind Sailing World Championship is coming up in a few weeks in New Zealand. Organizers will do everything they can to assure the success of these events; competitors are urged to participate as much as possible. You can keep abreast of activities by way of the bulletin and the IFDS Website.
My best wishes to each sailor for a good sailing season; I look forward to seeing you during the year and certainly at the IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championships for the three paralympic classes which will be held in October 2009 in Athens, Greece.
You can keep abreast of activities by way of the bulletin and the IFDS web site.
Do not hesitate to contact Emma Little at the Secretariat with stories and information that should be circulated.
Finally, the thanks of the IFDS Executive Committee to Emma Little for being such a well-organized, helpful assistant to us during our visit to Southampton. Job well done!
Fair winds,
Linda Merkle
IFDS President

ISAF Sailing World Cup Events
|
ISAF have included the three Paralympic classes of the One-Person, Two-Person and Three-Person Keelboats in the 2009 World Cup.
Sailors are advised to inform your National Authorities that the Paralympic Classes count in the medal table for 2009 World Cup.
The IFDS Executive Committee met with ISAF and briefed them on the concerns expressed by IFDS Sailors and Coaches. IFDS also requested that initially the Paralympic classes be made open in the World Cup events, but that only boats sailed by IFDS classified sailors in Paralympic mode qualify for the World Cup medal table. This proposal is still subject to approval.

IFDS Rankings
|
A test ranking system is being operated for the three Paralympic classes in 2009.
The events that have been chosen to count in the rankings are as follows;
1. Miami OCR, USA
2. Semaine Olympique Française, Hyeres, FRA
3. Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta, Weymouth & Portland, GBR
4. IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championship, One-Person, Two-Person and Three-Person Keelboats, Athens, GRE
Ranking points will be awarded as per the ISAF Ranking System and boats will only be awarded ranking points if they are fully compliant with Paralympic Classification and Points System. This test ranking will form the basis of a formal system for 2010 onwards. After this date further information will be made available on the chosen ranking events for 2010.
Please note that it is important that all sailors sort out their ISAF Sailor Id's as it has become apparent that some sailors hold more than one ISAF Sailor registration. If you have not already done so please confirm your ISAF Sailor Id with Emma Little.

Paralympic Events Debut At 2009 Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE
|
The 40th edition of the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE, to be held at Easter in the bay of Palma as part of the ISAF Sailing World Cup, will include Paralympic sailing events for the first time.
The 40 Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE, one of the most important Olympic sailing events in Europe and the third event of the 2008-2009 ISAF Sailing World Cup series, expects to gather together around 800 boats and over 1,200 sailors from 4-10 April in the bay of Palma. The regatta is open to the 13 events which will feature at the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Competitions: the ten Olympic events - 49er, Men's 470, Women's 470, Men's RS:X and Women's RS:X, Finn, Laser, Laser Radial, Star and Match Race Women; and the three Paralympic events - 2.4mR, SKUD18, Sonar.
Of the three Paralympic events, the 2.4mR is the better known in Spain, with a fleet of approximately 20 boats. It is a one-person keelboat, and as a sister to the bigger 6m, 8m and 12m yachts, possesses the typical powerful Metre boat sailing style. The other two are the SKUD18, a two-person keelboat with an asymmetrical spinnaker and the Sonar, a three-person keelboat.

2012 Paralympic Games
|
On 29 January, an official Project Review was held between the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the London Organizing Committee for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).
A delegation from the IPC, including IPC CEO Xavier Gonzalez, spent a day in London, Great Britain, to meet with several LOCOG Departments to discuss the current preparations for the London 2012 Paralympic Games. In various parallel working group sessions, the IPC received a detailed update on the preparation progress from LOCOG in areas such as ceremonies, media and communication, broadcasting, commercial, transport, Paralympic villages and venues. In the final plenary session, outcomes were discussed and priorities set for the further planning process.
"The day was an excellent opportunity to discuss current planning and further steps for the upcoming months. We are very confident that London will deliver excellent and unique Games in 2012," said IPC CEO Xavier Gonzalez.

2012 Paralympic Sailing Competition
|
The venue of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Competitions is a combination of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) and the adjoining commercial marina, in Dorset on England's south coast.
It has kick-started the regeneration of the former Naval Air Station at Portland, now known as Osprey Quay, where new residential, commercial and marina facilities are already underway. It is an exposed spot at the western end of the English Channel, providing some of the best natural Sailing waters in the UK, with facilities on land to match.
Work to enhance the sailing facilities at Weymouth and Portland has been completed. The enhancements to the existing WPNSA facilities include a new permanent 250m slipway and new lifting and mooring facilities.
The project was completed on budget and ahead of schedule, providing world-class facilities for elite athletes and the local community more than three years before the Games.
