Message from the President
|
The Paralympic Games is a unique celebration and sailing is proud to be part of that celebration. The Paralympic Sailing Competition will host 80 athletes from 25 nations across the three events. Each athlete will be aspiring to deliver the performance of a lifetime and achieve their dreams over the six days of racing.
A global sport, sailing represents athleticism and a combination of mental and physical stamina, racing in an arena that continually changes with the prevailing weather and sea.
The finest Paralympians from around the world will compete on the waters of Fushan Bay, Qingdao - each proud to be representing their nation. IFDS would like to thank the city of Qingdao for the tremendous support and commitment you have shown to sailing and disabled sailors.
IFDS wishes the athletes, Technical Delegates, International Paralympic Committee, BOCOG, officials, volunteers and fans an outstanding and successful 2008 Paralympic Games and Paralympic Sailing Competition.

Promotion of Paralympic Sports and the Paralympic Movement
|
On Wednesday 7 August 2008, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) took further action to promote Paralympic sports and the Paralympic Movement by launching a Channel on YouTube™, the leading online video community that allows people to discover, watch and share originally created videos.
From today on, fans of Paralympic Sport can go to the link at the bottom of the page to watch clips of Paralympic sports, athletes and events. Viewers of ParalympicSport.TV on YouTube can enjoy the different features YouTube offers: they can subscribe to the Channel, watch, rate and comment the latest video clips and upload their own videos and much more.
Said IPC President Sir Philip Craven: "Having a site on YouTube will help to further raise awareness for the Paralympic Movement. I encourage everyone out there to utilize this feature and upload any video that could provide another glimpse into the Paralympic world".

Winners and Paralympians Celebrate At Clagett Regatta Before Heading to China
|
The five American and six Canadian sailors who will represent their nations in the three sailing events of the 2008 Paralympic Games wrapped up their final day of racing for the 2008 C. Thomas Clagett Jr. Memorial Regatta being run from Sail Newport, Rhode Island's Public Sailing Center.
Their participation in "The Clagett" was the final step in preparing for the competition in China and illustrated perfectly the regatta's mission of developing and building the competitive skills of sailors with disabilities. It was an emotional finale for all the competitors and event organizers - their collective support was vocalized in urging the Paralympic teams to make the medal podium in Qingdao.

Kerry Gruson wins Ladies trophy
|
Miami-based Kerry Gruson, the first disabled woman helm to compete at Cowes Week, GBR was awarded the 2008 Liz Earle Ladies Day Trophy at this year's Skandia Cowes Week.
Ladies Day is an initiative that was introduced by the regatta organisers three years ago to celebrate the achievements and contribution of women in sailing from those who have overcome difficulties in order to succeed, to those who have undertaken remarkable challenges. At the awards ceremony at the Royal Corinthian YC, Dame Ellen MacArthur presented Kerry with the Isle of Wight Glass Trophy.
Competing in her third Skandia Cowes Week this year, racing a Sonar, Kerry continues her focus on overcoming her own disabilities and the additional element of recovery from cancer. She is a living illustration of joy and courage in sailing - a highly deserving winner of the Liz Earle Ladies Day Trophy.

IFDS Receives Donation from DAME (Design Award METS) for 2008
|
METS, the world s largest trade exhibition of marine equipment, materials and systems for the international marine leisure industry, is organized by Amsterdam RAI in association with the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA). Since 2006 METS incorporates the SuperYacht Pavilion, a show within a show especially aimed at the superyacht sector. The show's target groups are yacht builders, naval architects, repair yards, distributors, retailers, wholesalers, project managers, superyacht owners and captains, marina owners and operators and equipment manufacturers from the marine leisure and small commercial craft sectors around the world.
METS 2008 will be held from 18-20 November 2008 in the Amsterdam RAI Convention Centre, Amsterdam, NED. All product registration fees for the celebrated DAME (Design Award METS) for 2008 will be donated to the International Association of Disabled Sailing (IFDS). The donation will be presented at METS as part of a revamped ceremony that will include a new additional certificate for the most eco friendly or environmentally sustainable product, to be handed out at the jury s discretion.
The IFDS will use the donated funds to compile a set of specifications and guidelines for the development of equipment adaptations designed specifically for disabled sailors. Adaptations range from modified seating arrangements to the use of technology in steering the boat and controlling the sails. The project will share all knowledge on an International level, track equipment and adaptations, and provide some pre-built equipment or engineering designs to help countries develop or obtain equipment at little or no cost.
Although disabled sailing continues to attract an ever-wider audience, the sport currently suffers due to the lack of universal standards and shared data.
Irene Dros, METS Product Manager says, 'It's a wonderful reflection of the spirit of the DAME that key decisions for this year are so far reaching. What better way to encourage boating than to help a charity promote sailing to people around the world who may otherwise be unable to take part? And what better new certificate to introduce for the DAME than one that highlights our universal concern with the environment?'
